Holiday Spirits!
It turns out Frost Bitten isn't the only Kickstarter I'm in this month...
I hope you’ve all had a chance to spend some time with family and friends. I’ve finally had a few days off of work, yet remained busy getting some comic tasks done.
This morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that the fifth volume of Holiday Spirits was live on Kickstarter. Why? Because I’ve got a short story in there!
It’s actually something I alluded to in a previous post here and has a bit of a story behind it’s creation. Jérôme Gagnon, who did the amazing logo for Poor Old Ms. West, invited me to participate in the next Holiday Spirits anthology. This year’s theme was Classic Monsters. I initially told him I didn’t have anything in mind. I have a ton of ideas, but they usually bump around inside my head until they form an actual story. This creative accretion has lead to some great comics over the years, but it doesn’t help much when I’m tasked with something specific.
Well, inspiration struck (in the shower, where all good ideas seem to start) and within minutes, I had the entire thing conceived. I picked Koschei The Deathless, and you’ll have to back the project to see the full story, but here’s another snippet of artist Ahmed Raafat’s work in full colour. I love the textures!
Not to be completely overshadowed, Frost Bitten has surpassed $4k and is on pace to be my most successful project to date. With the first stretch goal met, all physical copies have been upgraded to prestige perfect bound books. The next goal isn’t a dollar amount, but my target of 200 backers. As of this post, that’s just 72 pledges away!
In support of this campaign, I’ve lined up a couple interviews. First up is Dec. 30 at 4pm Pacific with Al Mega at Comic Crusaders. Guaranteed to be a fun time! The following week, I’ll be catching up with The FAQS Project. James Boyce is one of the best interviewers I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I’m really looking forward to these and I hope you’ll tune in!
And of course, please continue spreading the word on this project. It’s been doing pretty well, but even at this point I have yet to break even on the production costs (my collaborators get paid and I’m forever chasing something).
Until next time…
Randy
